5 Tips for Navigating the Summer Waves Responsibly

ATTENTION! SUMMER IS ON HER WAY! A beach trip is on the mind with the temperature consistently in the 80s. As you and I head to the cool water, we must remember our responsibility to protect our oceans. From respecting marine life to minimizing pollution, here are essential tips for enjoying ocean activities responsibly:

1. Respect Marine Life:

The ocean is teeming with diverse marine life, from friendly dolphins to delicate coral reefs. When engaging in water activities, maintain a respectful distance from wildlife to avoid causing distress or harm. For my U.S. friends, the Marine Mammal Protection Act makes it punishable by law to harass marine mammals. Refrain from touching, feeding, or chasing marine animals; never attempt to ride or harass them. Observing marine life from a distance minimizes disruption to their natural behavior and habitat.

2. Choose Reef-Friendly Sunscreen:

Sunscreen is essential for any beach day. Unfortunately, certain chemicals found in many sunscreens can harm coral reefs and marine ecosystems. Opt for reef-friendly sunscreens free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals known to contribute to coral bleaching and disrupt aquatic life. Look for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which provide effective sun protection without harming coral reefs or a 'Reef Safe' logo.

3. Practice Leave No Trace:

Whether snorkeling, diving, or enjoying a beach day, adhere to the 'Leave No Trace' slogan to minimize your impact on the ocean environment. Pack out all trash, including food wrappers, plastic bottles, and cigarette butts, and dispose of them properly in designated receptacles. Avoid bringing single-use plastics to the beach, such as disposable water bottles and plastic bags, and opt for reusable alternatives. Bonus points for picking up any additional trash you see.

4. Practice Sustainable Fishing:

If you enjoy fishing in the ocean, do so responsibly by following sustainable fishing practices and adhering to local fishing regulations. Choose catch-and-release fishing whenever possible, and release undersized or non-target species unharmed. Use barbless hooks to minimize injury to fish, and avoid fishing in protected areas or marine reserves where fishing is prohibited. By practicing sustainable fishing, you help preserve fish populations and maintain healthy ocean ecosystems.

5. Support Ocean Conservation Efforts:

Coastal town communities are closely knit and often lead the advocacy for ocean conservation. On your next beach trip, check out the local wildlife conservation group. Learn what the organization does for coastal communities, and consider donating. Volunteering for beach clean-up initiatives is rewarding and a unique way to make memories on vacation.
