Lessons I learned as a Zoological Intern
1. Being a part of a team is incredible.
There is nothing more satisfying than walking into work and being a part of something bigger than yourself. The team that you will be a part of as an intern will be your family. Even after your time as an intern, your team will still be there to support you in all your future endeavors.
2. Everything you do, yes, even the grunt work, is for the betterment of animal welfare.
Scrubbing buckets, fish prep, and cleaning is a crucial part of animal husbandry. Your role as an intern helps the facility run smoothly and allows animal care professionals to spend more time with the animals.
3. Developing a work ethic as a young adult is crucial for any job you will work in the future (even non-animal care jobs).
I truly believe the hardest working people are found in zoological facilities. When you are allowed to work alongside a top zoological team, it’s nearly impossible not to develop a strong work ethic.
4. Have a grateful heart when you are given any opportunity (big or small).
When you look at every opportunity as a gift, it becomes so easy to be thankful. When someone gives you a chance, be sure always to say thank you.
5. A positive mindset will make your life easier.
Having a positive mindset will help you cope with stress. Being an Intern can be stressful, but looking for the positive in every situation will help you move forward with joy in your life.
